This year the annual free Rabbit R&D Webinar, hosted by the Centre for Invasive Species Solutions and Foundation for Rabbit-Free Australia, will focus on gene-drive technology.

It will bring researchers and practitioners together to help people understand this rapidly developing technology, and enable informed discussions within communities about its potential for rabbit control and the issues involved.

    Key messages

    • This is technically complex research, but the basics aren’t.

    • This will take time and money, and is not without risk, but the technology is feasible, and the risks are manageable.
    • This has great potential but is very challenging and will not ever be a ‘silver bullet’. Traditional ‘best practice’ rabbit management, and investment in research, is essential now and for the foreseeable future.

    • An introduction to gene-drive technology. Prof Paul Thomas
    • A gene-drive for rabbit control. Dr Tanja Strive & Dr Sarah Topfer

    • Risk Management for gene-drives. Dr Tanja Strive & Dr Aditi Mankad
